Enhancing Eye Care with Fast and Regular Testing: The Role of Lumio in Global Ophthalmology

Portable Eye Examination

Access to affordable diagnostic tools remains a major challenge in underserved regions, where traditional ophthalmic equipment is often unavailable, non-portable, or too expensive. While major cities benefit from well-equipped examination rooms, many residents live far from these centres of care. The Lumio device from Aston Vision Sciences bridges this gap by offering clinicians, NGOs, and outreach programmes a cost-effective, portable solution for fast anterior eye examinations in any environment.

What is Lumio?

The Lumio device is a handheld 7x magnifier with dual white and blue light function with a unique clip-in fluorescein filter. It is particularly effective in assessing the anterior eye and detecting corneal scratches and foreign bodies, which can be difficult to identify without enhanced magnification and appropriate lighting. This is particularly valuable for triaging corneal abrasions, foreign bodies, and early signs of commonly encountered conditions such as Trachoma, Blepharitis and Keratitis.

On top of this, one of Lumio’s standout features is its ability to visualise cataracts under dilation. By using broadband white light illumination, clinicians can assess lens opacity and cataract progression, even in settings where slit-lamp examinations are impractical.

Fluorescein Examination on the Go

When paired with fluorescein dye and blue light illumination, Lumio provides high-contrast visualisation of anterior eye structures, including the tear film, corneal punctures, and ulcers. This capability improves diagnostic confidence, enabling quick assessments for conditions such as dry eye disease.

Convenient and User-Friendly for All Ages

Designed for patients of every age—from active children to elderly individuals—Lumio’s ergonomic, handheld design removes the need for chin rests or awkward positioning. Unlike traditional slit-lamps, which require fixed installations and specialised training, Lumio is compact, intuitive, and battery-powered with up to 180 hours of continuous use. Its three-level brightness control adapts effortlessly to varying light conditions, and its mirrored design supports comfortable ambidextrous one-handed operation. These features combine to streamline workflow, saving an average of six minutes per patient.

Testimonial

Dr Austin Lifferth, Consultative Optometrist at Centre for Sight & Dry Eye, Indiana USA says “In eye care, precise information is key to timely intervention. Lumio delivers the critical data needed to identify corneal staining, achieve accurate diagnoses, and initiate prompt, patient-specific treatments. It is an intuitive breakthrough that drives better outcomes for our patients.”

Streamlined Workflow

Lumio is CE Marked and fully compliant with EU MDR regulations, meeting the highest international standards for safety and efficacy. NGOs and clinics in low-resource settings can significantly improve patient outcomes by integrating the cost-effective Lumio into their screening programmes. Its durability, ease of use, and long battery life make it ideal for mobile clinics, outreach, and rural healthcare initiatives—ensuring early detection and treatment remain accessible to those who need it most.
